The Bangkok Post recently published an insightful opinion piece by Mr. Anders Ahnlid, Director General of the National Board of Trade, Sweden, titled “Work together for rule-based trade.” In this article, Mr. Ahnlid highlights the shared 30-year anniversary of Thailand and Sweden’s membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), emphasizing their mutual commitment to a rules-based international trading system. Mr. Ahnlid expresses concern over the growing trend of protectionism and the erosion of multilateral trade norms, particularly noting the United States’ recent departure from WTO principles in its trade policies. He warns that such shifts could undermine the global trade framework, leading to increased uncertainty and economic coercion.
To counter these challenges, Mr. Ahnlid advocates for the strengthening of alliances among like-minded nations. He underscores the importance of finalizing the EU-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), viewing it as a strategic move to reinforce the global rules-based trade system. Drawing parallels with the EU-Vietnam FTA, he illustrates how such agreements can significantly boost trade and economic growth for all parties involved.
Mr. Ahnlid concludes by emphasizing that, amid rising protectionism, collaborative efforts like the EU-Thailand FTA are crucial for maintaining open, fair, and sustainable trade practices. He envisions a future where a broad coalition of nations upholds the principles of rule-based trade, ensuring economic progress and stability for all.
