Tanzania raises Sh1.6 billion to host Africa’s 2025 eLearning summit
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has raised more than Sh1.6 billion in a single night during a fundraising dinner gala held on April 16, 2025, in preparation for hosting the 18th eLearning Africa Summit.
The continental education and technology summit, which will bring together over 1,500 participants from more than 50 countries, will take place in Dar es Salaam from May 7 to 9, 2025.
The event is expected to attract education ministers, innovators, researchers, and policymakers from across Africa and beyond to discuss the future of digital learning.
Leading the fundraising event on behalf of the Deputy Prime Minister, minister for Works Abdallah Ulega described the summit as a historic opportunity for Tanzania.
“This summit puts Tanzania on the global map once again,” said Mr Ulega. “It comes at a time when the government is strengthening its digital diplomacy and enhancing the use of ICT in all sectors, especially education.”
He emphasised the need for Tanzania to embrace digital education systems.
“There is no turning back. We must adapt to technological advancement and ensure that our education system is aligned with global trends,” he added.
The funds raised will support logistical preparations, student participation, and innovation showcases during the summit.
Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Adolf Mkenda, called the event a major milestone for Tanzania’s education reform efforts.
“This is a great privilege,” Prof Mkenda said. “Tanzania has made significant progress in promoting innovation and digital tools in education. Hosting this summit will not only boost our image globally but will also accelerate our transition to modern learning systems.”
He added that the summit will provide a platform for Tanzanian youth, innovators, institutions, and stakeholders to engage with international players and form meaningful partnerships.
“We already have policies and strategies to mainstream the use of artificial intelligence and other technologies in our classrooms,” he noted. “We want everyone—students, tech developers, and academic institutions—to register and be part of this game-changing event.”
The summit is also expected to bring economic benefits through tourism, accommodation, transport, and other local services.
According to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Prof Carolyne Nombo, the success of the fundraising event showed Tanzania’s readiness to host global conferences.
“This is not just about the money,” she said. “It reflects the commitment of the government and its partners to invest in education and technology.”
She added that the event marked the beginning of broader stakeholder engagement in organising the summit.
Education analysts have welcomed Tanzania’s commitment, saying the summit could shape the future of learning across the continent.
An ICT and education policy expert, Dr Mussa Mbele, said hosting the event will inspire other African countries to prioritize digital education.
“eLearning is not just a trend—it is the future,” said Dr Mbele. “By hosting this summit, Tanzania is positioning itself as a leader in reimagining education in the digital age.”
He urged the government to ensure that the outcomes of the summit lead to practical implementation on the ground.
The summit will feature panel discussions, exhibitions, and networking events, all centered on transforming African education through technology.
According to the organisers, topics to be discussed include the role of artificial intelligence in education, access to digital learning tools, and how African countries can collaborate to reduce the digital divide.
“Let this be more than just an event,” said Prof Mkenda. “Let it be the moment that sparks a digital education revolution in Tanzania and across Africa.”
