Tanzania wants to reach $2 billion in fruit and veg exports

Tanzania has set an ambitious goal of securing $2 billion worth of fruit and vegetable export contracts by 2030 as part of its broader strategy to boost international trade, strengthen its economy, and increase foreign exchange earnings. This target was announced following Tanzania’s active participation in the Fruit Logistica 2025 trade fair held in Germany, one of the world’s leading events for stakeholders in the global horticulture value chain. The fair brings together exporters, importers, retailers, and logistics providers from over 130 countries.

Dr. Jacqueline Mkindi, CEO of the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA) and head of the national delegation, highlighted that the exhibition allowed Tanzanian producers and exporters to engage with advanced technologies and efficient logistics solutions for post-harvest handling and transport. She emphasized that the event opened major opportunities for Tanzania to integrate into global value chains and noted that contracts worth $12.6 million had already been secured. This progress is positioning Tanzania as an emerging force in the global fresh produce market.

A key outcome from the trade fair was a significant export deal involving Tanzanian avocados to India, expected to bring in more than $7.1 million in revenue over the next ten months. These contracts cover the full export value chain—from production and packaging to distribution in retail markets. Dr. Mkindi also noted strong interest from UK-based firms, which placed orders for six 40-foot containers of Tanzanian avocados within just one week.

Tanzania’s long-term vision is to transform its horticultural industry into a multi-billion-dollar sector by leveraging innovation, improving access to global markets, and forging strategic partnerships. The goal is to establish the country as a competitive exporter of fresh produce on the global stage.
