Tanzanian team wins computer programming challenge in India

Dar es Salaam. A Tanzanian tech team took home honours for computer programming in India.

An annual 36-hour competition called “The Hackathon” unites students, professors, and the research community from India and its African partners to address shared problems faced by their nations while also promoting cross-cultural understanding.

A total of 19 students from the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NMAIST) and the Dar es Salaam Institute of Technology (DIT) took part.

Steven Phales Ngaralije and Jackson Mihayo Seleman from DIT, Ghaniya Rashid Hamad, and Eunice Silas from NMAIST were among the winners.

The Indian Ministry of Education, the Ministry of External Affairs, and the All India Council for Technical Education collaborated with UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation, to plan the event this year.

According to a statement issued by the Indian high commission in Tanzania, this year 22 African countries participated, including Botswana, Cameroon, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Sierra-Leone, Togo, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.

“It serves as the foundation for creating potential start-ups with the potential to transform the world. It allows the participating students to unleash their creativity and explore new technologies to solve real-world problems under the guidance of experts—thereby spearheading business innovation in the modern world,” a statement from the Indian commission reads in part.

“The experience and knowledge gained by the Tanzanian students during the hackathon will be useful to them as well as the nation of Tanzania,” the embassy says.
