Taylor Swift buys back rights to her music

Taylor Swift, the award-winning singer, has announced that she now owns the complete rights to her entire music catalog.

In a statement posted on her official website, the Grammy-winning artiste described the achievement as “the reality of my greatest dream”.

The journey to reclaiming her masters began in June 2019 when music executive Scooter Braun acquired Big Machine Records, Swift’s former label.

The deal included the master rights to her first six albums: ‘Taylor Swift,’ ‘Fearless,’ ‘Speak Now,’ ‘Red,’ ‘1989’ and ‘Reputation’.

The 35-year-old US singer opposed the sale, citing Braun’s alleged role in the “relentless and manipulative bullying” she endured from his client Kanye West.

Since then, she has been working tirelessly to regain control of her life’s work.

“All of the music I’ve ever made now belongs to me. I’ve been bursting into tears of joy… ever since I found out this is really happening,” the statement reads in part.

“To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it.

“I can’t thank you enough for helping to reunite me with this art that I have dedicated my life to, but have never owned until now.

“I almost stopped thinking it could ever happen, after 20 years of having the carrot dangled and then yanked away.

“But that’s all in the past now.”

Swift began her songwriting career at just 14 years old. After signing with Big Machine Records in 2005 as a country artiste, she released six critically acclaimed studio albums before moving to Republic Records in 2018.

With over 200 million records sold worldwide, Swift is one of the best-selling digital artistes in history. She holds the title of the highest-grossing female touring act and is the most-streamed female artist on Spotify and Apple Music.

Her accolades include 14 Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, 40 American Music Awards, 39 Billboard Music Awards, and 23 MTV Video Music Awards.
