‘Teacher of the Month’ brings learning to life through creative science
CLARKTON, NC (WWAY) — A middle school science teacher in Bladen County is inspiring students with her hands-on teaching approach and creative methods. Laura Hall, a teacher at Clarkton School of Discovery, has been named WWAY’s Teacher of the Month for March 2025 for her dedication to inspiring young minds.
Hall, who has taught in Bladen County for 17 years, including the past six at Clarkton, is known for her innovative strategies that make science come alive for her students.
“I love middle school because it’s that transition,” Hall said. “Most kids when they get to high school, they already know which path they’re going to take, but middle school is where you can still hook them and get them on the right path.”
Her approach to teaching science includes a hands-on method where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and learn from their mistakes.
“You set things on fire, you let them blow stuff up, figuratively and literally,” Hall explained. “You just let them explore, and that’s how kids learn—through exploration. They fail, you let them try again.”
Hall’s unique teaching style has not gone unnoticed. Her son, Owen Hall, who is also one of her students, submitted her nomination for Teacher of the Month. In his nomination, Owen compared his mom to the beloved character Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, a teacher known for taking students on exciting, out-of-this-world adventures.
“That means I’m the one that takes them on field trips, I’m the one that gets them out of school to see all the science things happening in real life,” Laura Hall said.
Her other students also recognize the impact she has on their education.
“She’s great, she’s really fun and she helps us with our work a lot,” said 8th grader Miguel Ventura. “She allows us to work at our own pace so we’re not all getting stressed out. She’s a great teacher.”
As Teacher of the Month, Laura Hall received a $400 prize from Beach Bagels and Subs and Fulford Heating and Cooling. She plans to use the funds for a class project to build electric houses—a perfect fit for her hands-on science curriculum.
