Tech jobs lead India’s hiring market despite slowdown: Report

Tech was among the drivers of recruitment even as overall hiring has slowed, with a 21% decline since it peaked in January 2023, according to a report by global job matching and hiring platform Indeed.

While growth in tech hiring was not the fastest compared to some emerging sectors, it remained steady, with software development postings rising by 9.2% over the past three months. Data & analytics sector saw the highest growth in listings, up 15.4% during the same period.

“Even when overall hiring slows, tech remains the heartbeat of India’s job market. With one in five formal postings for software development, the real challenge isn’t demand, it’s whether we can build a workforce skilled enough to meet it,” said Callam Pickering, Indeed’s Asia-Pacific senior economist.

However, pay disclosure in the tech industry remains particularly low. Only 18.3% of software development job ads and 18.2% of IT systems & solutions postings included salary details in July. This contrasts with far greater transparency in sectors such as dental and childcare, where over 88% of postings disclosed pay.

Tech roles are often associated with high remuneration but the reluctance to share salary information could place employers at a disadvantage in an increasingly competitive hiring landscape.

Pay transparency has also seen a decline across the board. Just 45% of job ads included salary information in July, down from over 50% earlier this year.

Beyond tech, high-skilled sectors continue to drive hiring momentum. Postings in logistics support rose 14.3%, while therapy and dental roles increased by 13.7% and 13.6% respectively. These figures suggest a shift in demand towards specialised roles that require formal training and expertise.

Conversely, several areas witnessed notable declines. Medical information roles fell by 12.3%, followed by pharmacy (-10.7%), education and instruction (-8.0%), and physicians and surgeons (-7.8%). These contrasting trends highlight a deeper transition in India’s labour market towards more specialised, high-skill professions, even as cyclical fluctuations persist.

Overall, job postings on Indeed fell by 5.8% in July, marking a cooling of India’s formal hiring after two months of growth. Year-on-year, postings declined by 14.9%, though they remain 70% above pre-pandemic levels.
