Tech layoffs 2025: Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle and others replace thousands of jobs with AI – Technology News

The technology sector has experienced a period of significant workforce reduction in 2025, with major players like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Oracle laying off thousands of employees. This wave of layoffs has impacted over 80,000 tech employees across 176 companies so far this year, and none of them is just a result of economic headwinds. Instead, the layoffs are mostly attributed to the rising adoption of AI and automation, with companies focused on cutting all roles that can be automated.

Tech firms all over the world are letting go of employees in thousands, with some big names like Microsoft, Amazon and TCS involved in major restructuring. On the other hand, some companies, Google, are focused on retraining their employees to make better use of AI features and enhance their productivity.

While the exact numbers vary across companies, major tech giants are trimming their global workforce in multiple rounds. Microsoft has reportedly let go of more than 15,000 employees this year, while Meta has announced cuts of over 3,600 roles. Oracle has also initiated significant job cuts in its cloud division as it increases investments in AI infrastructure.

Here is a collection of all the major firms that let go of their human employees in favour of AI.

Oracle

Oracle continues its aggressive job-cut campaign globally. The latest round impacted at least 254 employees in the San Francisco Bay Area. Additional layoffs were reported in India, Canada, the US, and Europe. A separate filing also confirmed 101 jobs cut in Seattle.

Block

Jack Dorsey’s fintech firm, Block, is also set to cut close to 1,000 jobs, marking its second major workforce reduction in just over a year. The layoffs were disclosed internally in March under the initiative called “Smaller Block” as the company realigns its priorities.

Salesforce

Salesforce has already slashed 4,000 jobs in its customer support division, reducing it from 9,000 to 5,000 employees. This follows the company’s strategy to double down on AI, with AI agents handling about one million customer conversations. The company claims that agentic AI is improving automation and efficiency.

Intel

Intel plans to lay off more than 5,500 employees in the US as part of a wider plan to reduce its global headcount by around 25,000 by the end of 2025. The chipmaker says that it aims to create a leaner, more agile organisation.

Tata Consultancy Services

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, has announced plans to lay off approximately 12,000 employees globally in the fiscal year 2025-26. This amounts to around 2% of its workforce. The layoffs mainly target mid-level and senior employees as the company aims to become more agile and future-ready with AI. Although the layoff plans have sparked controversy among employee unions, TCS has defended the decision, citing skill mismatches amid technological changes rather than cost-cutting. TCS has also pledged to provide severance packages, outplacement assistance, and reskilling programs to affected workers.

Amazon

Amazon has made hundreds of job cuts in its Amazon Web Services cloud computing unit, books and devices division, and Wondery podcast division. CEO Andy Jassy warned that as generative AI adoption increases, the workforce requirements will decline. Key roles affected include customer service, software development, middle management, and administrative positions, which are increasingly being automated.

Crowdstrike

Crowdstrike announced plans to cut around 500 roles, which is about 5 per cent of its workforce, thus aiming to streamline operations and reduce costs. The company expects layoff-related charges between $36 million and $53 million.

Meta

Meta laid off over 3,000 employees in February, primarily targeting underperformers. CEO Mark Zuckerberg cited the need to raise workforce performance standards as the company faces challenging years ahead, especially in the age of AI. Zuckerberg later went on a hiring spree for his Meta Superintelligence Labs, poaching top AI talent with multi-million dollar salary packages.

Microsoft

Microsoft has cut more than 15,000 jobs through multiple rounds this year. The layoffs occurred in multiple rounds, including a major cut of 6,000 jobs in May and another 9,000 in July, spanning product, engineering, sales, marketing, and Xbox divisions.
