Tech Layoffs 2025: TCS, Microsoft, Intel and others cut thousands of jobs amid AI shift – Technology News

The tech industry has overseen multiple mass layoffs in 2025, but some of the most notable ones have happened in the month of July. Major names like Intel, Microsoft, Google, and even India’s own Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have either laid off or announced major layoffs going ahead in the year. As AI continues to take over the industry, more tech firms are reducing their human workforces in favour of AI based tools and services.

While the companies are stating economic uncertainties and AI-based automated systems as two of the main reasons behind mass restructuring, the trend seems to be catching on with all large-scale firms as well as new-age startups. Bangalore’s Ohm Mobility, a startup dealing in EV financing, recently shut shop owing to economic uncertainties. July 2025 has continued the trend of workforce reductions across the technology sector, with more expected in the month of August 2025.

However, here’s a look at five prominent tech companies that have seen notable job cuts in July:

Intel

The semiconductor giant has undertaken a significant restructuring, with multiple layoff announcements in July. It is indicated that planned cuts of approximately 2,400 workers in Oregon, 1,935 jobs in California (Folsom and Santa Clara), and nearly 700 positions in Chandler, Arizona are in line. On the whole, the estimates for Intel‘s US layoffs in July have amounted to 5,000, all of which amounts to 15% in 2025.

Microsoft

Microsoft continued its biggest workforce adjustments in July, laying of approximately 9,100 employees from its global workforce. This layoff particularly impacted the Xbox gaming division, sales, and legal teams. The company even withdrew from the Pakistan, although it continues to service its existing customers. These layoffs are part of Microsoft’s ongoing restructuring efforts and its strategic investments in AI.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)

TCS, which is regarded by many as a safe haven for IT professionals, almost made a shocking revelation. India’s largest IT services company announced plans to cut approximately 12,261 jobs, representing about 2% of its global workforce, with a majority affecting middle and senior management positions. While this is a year-long plan, the announcement and its impact on market sentiment occurred in July. The company cited AI-led disruptions and macro uncertainties as reasons.

Indeed + Glassdoor

On July 11, the job search platforms Indeed and Glassdoor announced plans to lay off 1,300 positions as part of their restructuring efforts.

Google

Google was also among the big names to let go of its human workforce. July saw specific cuts impacting its smart TV division, including Google TV and Android TV. The company is reportedly reducing its 300-member team by 25% and cutting funding by 10%. The layoff efforts have been made to streamline operations and reallocate resources towards AI projects, as Google states.
