Tesla seeks homologation for Model S, Model Y in India, hints market entry: report – Car News

With China facing strict US sanctions, Tesla sees India as a viable alternative, being the third-largest automotive market in the world.

The ongoing chatter around Tesla’s entry into the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market has only gained impetus in the last couple of months. Every other day, there’s some new development that keeps industry experts hooked and wondering if the American EV giant will set its sights on India.

In the latest development, Tesla has reportedly sought for homologation of two EVs in India hinting at its imminent entry. According to a recent IANS report, the Elon Musk-led company has filed for homologation of Model S and Model Y. This isn’t the first time Tesla has applied for homologation of its vehicles in India.

As per the report, Tesla had previously submitted seven applications for homologation in India, which were meant for test cars. An eighth application was recently approved. Homologation is the certification process that ensures a vehicle is roadworthy and complies with the standards set for all vehicles manufactured in or imported into India. This process includes tests to verify that the vehicle meets Indian market requirements for emissions, safety, and overall roadworthiness as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

This development coincides with ongoing discussions between the US and India regarding a free trade agreement aimed at reducing tariffs to boost bilateral trade. Elon Musk has expressed strong interest in entering India, seeking a foothold in the world’s third-largest car market as an alternative to China, especially after the country faced strict US sanctions.

While the Indian government is eager for Musk to establish a manufacturing facility for Tesla within the country, the billionaire currently prioritizes exporting Tesla vehicles to India without immediate plans for local production.
