Thailand sees surge in foreign tourist arrivals during Songkran week

From January 1 to April 13, Thailand welcomed over 10.7 million international tourists, generating more than 516 billion baht in revenue.

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thailand recorded a sharp rise in foreign tourist arrivals during the Songkran holiday week, with an average of over 95,000 visitors per day. According to the Office of the Prime Minister, 666,180 international tourists entered the country between April 6 and 12, representing a 10.73 percent increase compared to the previous week. The surge coincided with nationwide Songkran celebrations, which drew large numbers of visitors to both the capital and regional cities.

In Bangkok, the Maha Songkran World Water Festival attracted major crowds, while popular destinations such as Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Hat Yai also saw strong international turnout. Arrivals from short-haul markets, including China, Malaysia, and India, drove much of the growth, supported by regional connectivity and travel convenience. Spring holidays in parts of Europe also contributed to increased long-haul arrivals from countries such as Germany and France.

Malaysia topped the list of source countries during the week with 102,106 visitors, followed by China with 82,274 and India with 55,158. Russia and the United Kingdom completed the top five, although arrivals from the UK saw a slight decrease. Growth rates from China and India exceeded 20 percent, underlining strong holiday-season demand from both markets.
