The 12 cleanest beaches in India

Everyone loves some sun and sand, but keeping our beaches spick and span can be tricky, given the sheer number of tourists and activities on our shores. However, a handful of beaches across India have been maintained squeaky clean and pristine. As of 2025, 12 Indian beaches hold the Blue Flag, an international certification for the cleanest beaches in the world. Read on for the full list of the cleanest beaches in India.

What is the Blue Flag?

The Blue Flag certification is an eco-level tag that is one of the world’s most recognised awards for clean, safe, and environmentally friendly beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators. It is presented by the Denmark-based agency Foundation for Environment Education.

The model aims to provide tourists with clean and hygienic bathing water, amenities, and a safe and healthy environment, while also ensuring sustainable development of the area. To qualify for a Blue Flag, 33 stringent criteria relating to environmental education and information, bathing water quality, environmental management, conservation, and safety and accessibility standards must be met by the beaches.

How is it awarded?

Individual municipalities apply for the certification to the National Jury, which conducts an initial evaluation before sending approved cases to the International Jury. The International Jury consists of members from the FEE Board, UNESCO, European Network for Accessible Tourism (ENAT), World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), European Union for Coastal Conservation (EUCC), and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The jury looks for several qualifications, including waste management, cleanliness, bathing facilities, disability-friendly facilities, parking facilities, solar lighting, and more. The certification is awarded every sailing or bathing season; over 5,000 marinas, beaches, and tourist boats across 51 countries received a Blue Flag in 2024.
