The 2025 NBA Draft kicks off at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on June 25. The Dallas Mavericks hold the No. 1 overall pick after winning the lottery and are set to draft Cooper Flagg.
Dylan Harper, the six-foot-five guard from Rutgers, is projected to go No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs. But after that, the draft becomes much harder to predict.
On the latest episode of “The Athletic NBA Daily”, Andrew Schlecht and Alex Speers were joined by The Athletic’s Sam Vecenie to preview how the event might unfold.

They discussed how the top prospects from last year’s class would rank among this year’s current crop; the impact that name, image, and likeness (NIL) rights have had on the draft and particularly the depth into the second round; and how NIL has incentivized more international players to pursue the college route.
Andrew, Alex and Sam also explored whether teams might look to trade away second-round picks due to the shallower pool of talent, which teams could be the most aggressive in trading up for V.J. Edgecombe or Ace Bailey, whether Edgecombe, Bailey, Kon Knueppel, or Tre Johnson have star potential, and also looked at the chances of the Spurs moving the No. 2 overall pick.
Later in the show, the trio broke down how Sam’s draft philosophy has evolved over the years, analyzed Jeremiah Fears’ game and looked at the most polarizing players in this year’s draft, compared Khaman Maluach to other recent seven-foot lottery picks with offensive question marks and looked at how Carter Bryant’s game might translate to the NBA level.
