‘The Batman Part II’ Production Start Date; News on James Gunn’s ‘Super’ Sequel

A letter to Warner Bros. Discovery’s shareholders this AM has confirmed that Matt Reeves‘ The Batman Part II will finally start filming in the spring. This is for an Oct. 1, 2027 theatrical release.

The note praised the recent success of James Gunn’s Superman which has already grossed $560M worldwide. In addition, WBD CEO David Zaslav has other news.

“James Gunn is already preparing to write the next installment in the Super family,” he confirmed.

“In film, James Gunn is busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), Clayface (2026) and the next Wonder Woman. In addition, The Batman II (2027) is preparing to begin shooting next spring, among several other projects in development. The 10-year vision for the DC universe also includes an exciting array of television projects, including The Penguin, the upcoming new season of ‘Peacemaker,’ and the debut of ‘Lanterns’ in 2026. In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences and social.” reads the shareholder note.

Separately, according to Production List, the Robert Pattinson-starring The Batman II has “officially” entered the pre-production stage.

Pattinson is set to reprise his role as the Dark Knight, with Reeves confirming that Colin Farrell would also return as The Penguin, giving continuity to the HBO series.

Part II was initially slated to open in 2025, but has suffered several delays along the way. Earlier this year, Reeves confirmed he was continuing his work on the script and was expected to begin filming by the end of the year.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn defended the delays, noting that it was “fairly common.”

“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” he wrote on Threads last year. “7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”

Gunn confirmed that delaying the release until 2027 was due to the writing, saying, “There isn’t a full script,” and adding, “Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting, and post-production on big films.”

In July of this year, Gunn confirmed he had Reeves’ The Batman Part II script and it was “great.”
