The DCU’s Most Exciting New Movie Gets a Harsh Reality Check From Writer

The rebooted DC Universe has a lot of exciting shows and movies already in the pipeline, including Lanterns and Clayface (both of which are now in production), as well as Waller and Wonder Woman, which both received positive updates recently. But one of the DCU’s most exciting new projects isn’t as official as fans once thought. Following the release of the breakout original horror film, Weapons, Zach Cregger got DC fans very excited when he revealed his idea for a Henchmen movie. But we might be waiting a very long time for that film to hit our screens, if that ever happens.

Zach Cregger recently appeared on the Double Toasted podcast to promote Weapons, and the director clarified the greatly exaggerated reports about his Henchmen movie. “This has been blown out of proportion online,” Cregger began. The initial reports suggested that Cregger was actively developing the film with James Gunn and DC Studios, based on a script he wrote many years ago. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. He explained:

“So, yeah, I wrote Henchmen, which is a story that takes place in the DC Universe like Years before I wrote Barbarian, and I really love it. But it’s not a Joker and Harley script, I’ve seen that online. And, no, I haven’t talked to James Gunn about it. I haven’t really talked to anyone at [DC Studios] about it because, you know, as much as I love that story, I have Resident Evil in front of me and then there’s this sci-fi movie I’m looking to make after Resident Evil that I also wrote a long time ago…That’s going to take up a couple years of my life right there.”

Zach Cregger didn’t say his DCU Henchmen movie will never happen. However, “there’s no point of me running around to set this sail up, right now,” when he already has two movies in the works. Ultimately, unless an update about the project comes directly from Cregger, Gunn, or DC Studios, take it with a giant pinch of salt. “I think because it’s such a fun playground, people have written a lot about it online, and not much of that is true.”

What Is Zach Cregger’s ‘Henchmen’ Script About?

Zach Cregger might not have a Henchmen movie for a good few years, if it ever comes to fruition, but he does have a script. According to Cregger’s earlier comments, the film would have focused on low-level henchmen under villains like Harley Quinn and The Joker in the DC Universe. Where Cregger admitted that he wrote the script before 2022’s Barbarian, it means his script likely would have been based around the old DCEU, or a completely new DC Universe.

Henchmen might be nothing more than a pipe dream, but the DCU still has some very interesting projects in the pipeline. Alongside the aforementioned Lanters, Clayface, and Waller, Season 2 of Peacemaker is currently streaming on HBO Max, bringing back John Cena’s fan favorite “hero.” Following Peacemaker, Supergirl will be the DCU’s next movie when it releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
