The Healing Power of Juniper: Turkmen Scientists Develop Next-Generation Ointments

The Institute of Chemistry at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan has conducted research focused on studying the essential oils of juniper (archa) and their medical applications. Scientists have developed three types of therapeutic ointments based on active compounds extracted from various parts of this unique plant, as reported by the electronic newspaper Turkmenistan: Golden Age.

In collaboration with pharmacologists from the Turkmen-Indian enterprise ‘Türkmenderman Ajanta Farma Limited’, the therapeutic properties of an ointment made from essential oil derived from the bark and berries of archa were evaluated.

The results are promising: ointments with 1%, 3%, and 5% concentrations of essential oil accelerate the healing of burns, including damage to the retina, and effectively cleanse wound surfaces. Notably, these ointments do not cause skin irritation.

It has been confirmed that the essential oils of Turkmen juniper contain a rich complex of active substances, including alcohols, terpenes, and organic acids, which account for their broad therapeutic potential.

The medicinal properties of archa have long been recognized in traditional medicine. Its stems, berries, and needles were used as natural antibacterial, antiseptic, and antiviral remedies. Juniper berries served as diuretic and expectorant materials, while archa balm was applied to speed up wound healing. The above-ground parts of the plant were used to prepare soothing baths, compresses for joint pain, and aromatic infusions.

Modern research has validated and provided scientific backing for these traditions, opening new prospects for pharmaceuticals. In the future, beyond ointments, new medicinal forms based on juniper could be developed.

Since Turkmen juniper is listed in the Red Book of Turkmenistan, the project involves cultivating juniper trees in specialized nurseries to source raw materials for industrial production.

This approach addresses two goals simultaneously: ensuring the production of a pharmaceutical product under a national brand and contributing to the greening and afforestation of the country’s foothill regions. ///nCa, 28 August 2025
