The Horror Movie Remake First Released on 6/6/06 Gets Resurrected on Streaming
Back on June 6, 2006, the remake of The Omen was released in movie theaters. Of course, its release date was not a coincidence. Given that the film tells the story of the son of Satan, its release date was selected to tie into the “666” number. The movie’s marketing at the time touted this, making sure horror fans knew about the significance of the date.
Nearly two decades later, The Omen (sometimes referred to as The Omen: 666) is being resurrected on a free streaming platform. Starting on Aug. 1, it will be available to watch for free on Tubi. The film follows a diplomat (Schreiber) and his wife (Stiles) after they learn that their adopted child, Damien (Davey-Fitzpatrick), just might be the son of Satan. While not as celebrated as the film it’s based on, some viewers may find that it has a certain charm of its own.

While the movie serves as the fifth installment of the franchise, it is a direct remake of the original version of The Omen, released in 1976. David Seltzer, who wrote the original, returned to pen the script for the 2006 version. John Moore directed the remake; the original was helmed by Richard Donner. Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick starred alongside Julia Stiles, Liev Schreiber, Mia Farrow, David Thewlis, Pete Postlethwaite, and Michael Gambon. Original Damien actor Harvey Spencer Stephens also made a cameo.
The Omen Was Remade Just in Time for 6/6/06
Upon release, the film set a record for the highest opening on a Tuesday in United States box office history. While it no longer holds that record, it still sits at No. 7 overall for the Tuesday domestic box office. It earned $12 million on opening day from horror fans who chose to see the film on the big day, especially after the marketing push. Ultimately, the movie made $120 million against a $25 million budget, making it a financial hit.

Despite its gross, the creature feature was a critical and commercial failure.
Unfortunately, the reception wasn’t quite so stellar. The movie has an approval rating of 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, though its audience score is a bit higher at 40%. Along with getting roasted by critics, the film even saw Thewlis get nominated at the Razzies for Worst Supporting Actor. Even so, Davey-Fitzpatrick gave the movie some redemption by winning a Fangoria Chainsaw award for “Creepiest Kid.”
The remake did not spawn sequels of its own, unlike the classic version from the 70s. After the film’s release, the franchise went dormant until 2016 when the TV series Damien was launched on A&E. The TV show served as a legacy sequel to the original movie. In 2024, the franchise returned to the big screen with The First Omen, a new film that was a prequel to the 1976 film.
The Omen starts streaming on Tubi on Aug. 1.
