The Matrix is one of those iconic cult movies that has been religiously studied and picked apart over the years, with new meaning being gleaned as the film continues to evolve and reflect our own socio-political landscape.
Along with the anti-capitalist ideology and many differing thematic strands, the film also symbolises a new era of visual effects and digital technology, with some scenes that contained never-before-seen special effects and a daringly modern style, which has also contributed towards its timeless legacy. However, while Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss are still most celebrated for their roles in the film, it remained a kick in the teeth and endless regret for one actor who turned down the chance to star in the film.
There are some actors who become most familiar with a particular genre of film throughout their time on the big screen, growing accustomed to the twists and turns of horrors, action flicks or romantic dramas, building a reputation for one specific style. However, throughout the course of Sandra Bullock’s career, she has dipped in and out of a myriad of genres, starring in high-stakes heist movies, romantic comedies, space horrors and criminal dramas. Her time on screen has been diverse and eclectic, with iconic roles in film such as Gravity, Miss Congeniality, Bird Box and Oceans 8.
However, despite boasting a number of impressive credits, the actor described her disappointment at not being part of one film in particular. Bullock explained, “There haven’t been any roles that I wanted that I didn’t get, but there was a movie I wish I had done: The Matrix. At the time [I was approached about it], it wasn’t cast with Keanu, and I didn’t see myself with the person they wanted. Later, I saw the movie and loved it. It was sexy and great because of Carrie-Anne and Keanu”.
After turning down the chance to star in such a phenomenally successful franchise, you would undoubtedly wish for your past self to have a crystal ball or to go back in time and reverse your decision. But perhaps her regret over this almost-role is what led her to later choose similarly futuristic action films, taking a leading role in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, which one multiple Academy Awards, including a ‘Best Actress’ nomination for Bullock.
The film strangely shares many qualities with The Matrix, with both being set in dystopian versions of our world and making use of innovative technology and visual effects to immerse us in the logic of a heightened world. Bullock recently starred in Bullet Train and Bird Box, also existing in the realm of exaggerated and modern stories that haunt us with the imagined threats of a futuristic world that is plagued by civil unrest and chaos.
While this closely reflects the world we are living in now, perhaps it was also an unconscious decision by the actor to return to these types of stories and her talent for portraying the interior conflict of someone who is hellbent on survival, despite having the odds stacked against them.
