The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie Reportedly Eyes Popular Pick to Play Princess Zelda

A live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda is currently in development, but as of now, no names have officially been announced as part of the cast. Rumors are swirling, however, and a new report suggests that one popular pick with fans is up for the role of Princess Zelda.

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Hunter Schafer is being eyed for the role of Zelda in the live-action Legend of Zelda movie. Many fans have already called for Schafter to get the role, in part because of her physical resemblance to the iconic video game princess. What seals the deal for fans with the potential casting is Schafer’s acting abilities, as she has drawn praise for her role as transgender high school student Jules Vaughn in the hit HBO drama Euphoria; she is set to return for the show’s third and final season. She also played Tigris Snow in the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, and starred in the horror movie Cuckoo.

“That would be so cool,” Schafer told Entertainment Tonight in 2023 about the possibility of playing Zelda, due to the fantasy casting online. “I played that video game a bunch when I was a kid. That’s such a good game.”

No Casting Announcements Have Been Officially Made

It’s possible that Schafer could end up getting the role, but nothing is official at this point, so Zelda could also end up being played by someone else. This will be a coveted role, and the voice of the video game Zelda, Patricia Summersett, has also expressed interest in playing the live-action version of the character. Of course, the role of Link will also be sought by many hopefuls in Hollywood. One popular choice with fans for that role is Percy Jackson and the Olympians star Walker Scobell, though the actor himself seemed to be apprehensive about taking on the part if the offer came his way.

“Actually, I don’t know. I don’t know if I’d be interested in playing Link,” he said in 2023, per Variety. “If they came to me, I’d definitely consider it, one hundred percent,” the young actor added. Scobell revealed he was familiar with the Legend of Zelda games, “I have played Breath of the Wild,” he said. “I haven’t played the new one, Tears of the Kingdom, but my dad loves Legend of Zelda. He played the games when he was younger.”

What’s known is that the movie will be directed by Wes Ball (Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes). Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing with Ball and his producing partner, Joe Hartwick Jr., via Oddball Entertainment.

The Legend of Zelda will be released in theaters on March 26, 2027.
