The Worst Jason Bourne Movie Is a Streaming Hit on Max

The fifth installment of the Bourne franchise, 2016’s Jason Bourne, has found new life on streaming as it cracked Max’s top 10 list on Jan. 12. Per FlixPatrol, the Matt Damon film, which currently has a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score, is in the No. 8 spot on Max.

Arguably the weakest of the five films, which started with 2002’s The Bourne Identity, CBR in its review of the movie back in 2016, said that it was likely the worst movie of that summer and actually quite “boring.” The Bourne franchise includes the Damon-lead The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Jeremy Renner starred in 2012’s The Bourne Legacy. Damon was back again for Jason Bourne in 2016, alongside Tommy Lee Jones.

The basic plot of the franchise centers around Jason Bourne (Damon), who is a CIA assassin who suffers from dissociative amnesia and seeks to discover his true identity. The movies are based on the novels by author Robert Ludlum. In addition to the film franchise, a spinoff television show called Treadstone was produced and aired for one season on the USA Network in 2019.

How to Watch the Bourne Movies in Order

The Jason Bourne franchise is one of the most well-known in the action genre, so let’s take a look at the best order to explore these movies.

The Fifth Bourne Film Did Well At the Box Office

Jason Bourne starts off with the title character taking on opponents in underground boxing matches. Bourne returns to the CIA’s spotlight when Nicky Parson, played by Julia Stiles, is caught hacking black ops files. CIA director Robert Dewey (Jones) tries to bring down Bourne with the help of an assassin, played by Vincent Cassel, all while another CIA agent tries to help Bourne connect to his past and come back to work with the CIA.

A Box Office Hit

The $120 million big-budget Jason Bourne did go on to earn $415 million at the worldwide box office, despite it possibly being the worst of the franchise. Comparatively, The Bourne Identity earned $214 million worldwide against a budget of $60 million, per Box Office Mojo.

Another Bourne Movie?

A possible sixth Bourne film was announced in 2023, but in October 2024, director Edward Berger said no progress had been made on the project since the announcement. Per Cinema Daily US, Berger said he was not sure whether he would end up directing Bourne 6 after all. He said he was not actively working on the movie and has other projects that he’s keeping busy with until at least next summer. Berger added that there needs to be a “reason” to bring Damon back as the titular character.

“Well, I mean, it’s really not clear whether…I’m not doing it right now. And I really don’t know what I will do in the future. There’s a bunch of options, and I have to bring out this movie (Conclave) to the theater quickly. I have to finish (The Ballad of a Small Player), which takes me until next summer, so anything that goes beyond is kind of beyond my comprehension. But, Bourne is a wonderful franchise, and if there ever were, but I don’t have it, but if there ever were an element that hasn’t been told yet, and a good reason to bring it back, and for me to have the feeling I can make the movie as good as (Bourne franchise director) Paul Greengrass did, because he did great, great films And that is a very high hurdle to jump over, you know?” Berger said.
