Theatre Royal Winchester: Exciting Science makes learning fun

The auditorium at Winchester’s Theatre Royal was packed with young boys and girls on Sunday, November 23, for a daytime Exciting Science show.

The poster’s bright colours and surprised faces were enough to catch the eye of my seven-year-old on a previous visit.

And with its explosions, bangs and barmy experiments, this science show was anything but boring.

The four scientists – led by Mad Mike and Crazy Kelly (otherwise known as Kelly Sims and Mike Newman, who also write the show) – took the whole crowd on a whistlestop tour of every experiment you ever hoped to see in science lessons but never actually did.

There was a stream of fabulous, fun, and fact-filled experiments, from exploding foam that spilled onto the stage in an eruption of colour to loud exploding balloons that burst into balls of fire.

The show, which included an interval (great as it meant ice-cream), was nearly two hours long, meaning it was good value for the money.

The young crowd loved all four scientists; funny and slapstick enough to provoke laughter and in no way patronising or dull, they all offered a perfect mix of entertainment.

Highlights from the show included large inflatables being thrown into the audience to see which one came back quickest, smoke rings being created and pelted out by the staff, and a vacuum cleaner that turned into a missile launcher, firing toilet roll paper to shrieks of delight.

The show was packed full of action, and the two tiers at the Theatre Royal enjoyed the fun.

After the show, the scientists held a meet-and-greet in the foyer, which attracted a long line of little fans.

My son was delighted to meet them and pose for a picture. When asked what his favourite part was, he quickly responded, “ALL OF IT.” I’ll take that as a hit, then. Top marks Exciting Science, and anything that makes learning fun get a big thumbs up from me.

Exciting Science will next appear at the Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury, on Saturday, March 15, then at West Cliff Theatre Clacton on Sunday, April 6, and then at the Institute Braintree on Monday, April 7.

The Theatre Royal Winchester has several kids shows on its lineup for this year: There’s A Monster In Your Show will be held on Thursday, March 6 and Friday, March 7,  Three Little Vikings on Saturday, March 15 and (Julia Donaldson’s) The Baddies on Friday, March 21 until Sunday, March 23.
