This 2000s Thriller That’s Aged Poorly Is 1 of the Most-Watched Movies on Netflix

The Silence of the Lambs and True Detective: Night Country star Jodie Foster’s problematic Flightplan is rising the ranks of the streaming charts.

Per FlixPatrol, Flightplan starring Jodie Foster has officially reached the number four spot on the list of the top streaming movies worldwide on Netflix for Aug 1. As of the time of writing, Flightplan sits just behind the original Happy Gilmore in third place, while Happy Gilmore 2 and KPop Demon Hunters continue to dominate the number one and two spots on the list.

Directed by Robert Schwentke from a screenplay by writers Peter A. Dowling and Billy Ray, Flightplan starred Foster as Kyle Pratt, a recently widowed aircraft engineer who sets out to return home from Berlin alongside her 6-year-old daughter Julia and the body of her late husband, David. After falling asleep on the plane, Kyle discovers that her daughter is gone, while everyone else aboard the flight is adamant that they either never saw Julia or that the young girl never existed. This kicks off a tense cat-and-mouse game as Kyle uses her knowledge of the very same super-sized plane she designed to outmaneuver her pursuers and uncover the truth of the terrifying conspiracy at hand.

Flightplan features a tight ensemble cast including Marlene Lawston as Julia, Peter Sarsgaard as Air Marshal Gene Carson and Sean Bean as Captain Marcus Rich. During its original theatrical run, Flightplan brought in more than $223 million against a $55 million budget. Unfortunately, that didn’t help the film when it came to being generally lambasted by both critics and audiences alike as an underwhelming and overly complicated thriller. The film has also gone on to suffer in recent years due to a sequence in which Kyle accosts an Arab passenger with accusations that he stole her child.

What’s Next for Jodie Foster?

Over the past couple of years, Foster’s career has gone through yet another major resurgence, with the star receiving her first Primetime Emmy Award in 2024 and yet another Golden Globe in January of this year. In May, Foster led the cast of director Rebecca Zlotowski’s A Private Life (Vie privée in the original French), which marked her first French-speaking role in a feature film. A Private Life was widely lauded by critics, garnering it an impressive 73% “Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. While Foster’s performance in True Detective: Night Country has been hailed as one of the greatest of her career, and her role in A Private Life proved similarly successful, it isn’t quite clear where she will be heading next on the small or silver screen.

Flightplan is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
