This $621M Fantasy Sequel Is 1 of the Best Dragon Movies Ever Made (& It’s Blowing Up on Streaming)

One of the best dragon movie sequels of all time is becoming a massive hit on streaming. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is climbing up the charts following the recent live-action remake’s success.

FlixPatrol reports that How to Train Your Dragon 2 is up +3 spots and holding the #6 spot on Amazon Prime’s Top 10 Movies in the United States as of July 20, 2025. It overtakes the massively successful Super Mario Bros. Movie (#7) while trailing behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (#5). The fantasy film was originally released in 2014 as the second installment in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, which has recently come back into the spotlight following DreamWorks and Universal’s wildly popular live-action remake of the first film.

Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou and Game of Thrones star Kit Harington joined the cast for How to Train Your Dragon 2, with Blanchett starring as Hiccup’s long-lost mother and a dragon rescuer. Hounsou played the ruthless villain trying to take over the world, with Harington playing Eret, the dragon trapper who sells his captured prey to the wicked Drago.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 followed in the footsteps of its predecessor and was successful with critics and audiences at the box office. With a budget of $145 million, the animated sequel drew in over $621 million worldwide, far surpassing the first film’s $494.9 million showing. Critics praised the movie for further expanding the universe’s world with tight action and emotional depth, giving How to Train Your Dragon 2 an average 92% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

A Live-Action How To Train Your Drago 2 is Already On the Way

The live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon has already proven to be a big success for Universal Pictures, grossing $573 million worldwide and shooting to the top of the charts shortly after its arrival on digital. Before the film even arrived in theaters, Universal Pictures announced a live-action remake of the sequel is already in development.

How to Train Your Dragon 2‘s live-action version is currently scheduled to be released on June 11, 2027. Exact details about the remake, including its creative team and who will be playing the new additions to the cast, have not been announced at this time.
