Here, we will tell you about India’s first double decker train. The Flying Ranee Express became the first train to be attached with the double-decker coaches on December 18, 1979. The Flying Ranee operated between Surat and Mumbai Central covering 263 km in about 4 hours and 40 minutes.

The train had 10 Second Class double-decker coaches, each with a capacity of 148 passengers. Due to the changes in composition, the carrying capacity of the train increased by 29 percent.

The double decker service was discontinued in July 2023 and was replaced by the new single deck Flying Ranee with air-conditioned chair cars, second-class seating coaches, a ladies-only coach, and a season ticket holders coach for ladies in addition to the general coaches.

Flying Ranee is presently operated with an Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB) rake consisting of 2 reserved AC chair car coaches, 7 Reserved chair car coaches, 6 General Second class coaches, 1 General second class coaches earmarked for First class MST passholders, 1 General second class coach earmarked for Second class MST passholders, 1 General second class coach earmarked for ladies, 1 General second class earmarked for Second class MST ladies passholders, 1 End-on Generation coach & 1 Seating cum Luggage coach.

This train’s rake previously used to include double decker non-AC coaches. These coaches were removed when the train was upgraded with an LHB rake in July 2023.
