Three former Georgia athletes selected for induction into Georgia Sports Hall of Fame | Georgia Sports
Three Georgia alumni — former gymnast Leah Brown, former football kicker John Kasay and former basketball standout Bunny Fuller Harris — will be inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, the organization announced recently.
The trio will be enshrined during ceremonies scheduled for Feb. 20 and 21 next year in Macon, Georgia.
Brown was a 14-time All-American for the GymDogs from 1994-97 and ranked No. 1 nationally in the all-around, vault and floor in 1997, as well as No. 2 on bars. She scored a perfect 10.0 16 times on vault and three times on floor and became the first gymnast in NCAA history to record a 10.0 in her collegiate debut.
Brown received the Arthur Ashe Award for Black Issues in Higher Education in 1995, earned her undergraduate degree in genetics from Georgia and was inducted into the UGA Circle of Honor in 2016.
After graduating, Brown joined the U.S. Navy in 1999 and attended medical school at Ohio State. She completed an internship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and served as a battalion surgeon at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
She was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2006 and to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012, earning the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commendation Medal.
Brown currently serves as an orthopedic surgeon with the Navy Reserves and runs a private practice in Phoenix, Arizona.
Kasay, an Athens native, was a four-year letterman for Georgia football from 1987-90. He converted 46 field goals and 79 extra points in his career for a total of 217 points, which is top-20 all-time in Georgia history.
One of the most memorable moments from his career was a 39-yard game-winner as time expired to lift Georgia past Arkansas 20-17 in the 1987 Liberty Bowl. He earned second-team All-SEC and third-team All-America honors following his senior season.
Kasay was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the fourth round of the 1991 NFL Draft and spent four seasons with the team before joining the Carolina Panthers, where he played for 15 years and made the Pro Bowl in 1996.
He finished his career with the New Orleans Saints in 2011 and retired as a Panther in 2013 after signing a one-day contract with the franchise. Kasay made 461 field goals and scored 1,970 career points in the NFL, which ranks ninth all-time.
Harris starred at Taylor County High School, where she scored more than 2,200 points and averaged 22 points per game while leading the Lady Vikings to four state titles and 100 straight wins.
She then played at Middle Georgia College from 1972-74, leading the team to a junior college state championship, before transferring to Georgia. Harris became the leading scorer during the Georgia Lady Bulldogs’ first winning season while averaging 18.9 points per game from 1974-76.
