In Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district, a tigress seemed to have captured the attention of wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists alike. For months, she has roamed the dense sugarcane fields near the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve, an area renowned for its elusive “Sugarcane Tigers”, for tigers that venture beyond the forest into agricultural lands.

This tigress, named Mitthi by wildlife content creator Harvinder Maan, briefly disappeared from the region, wandering into the neighboring Kheri district. After covering a distance of nearly 50 kilometres, she has now returned to her familiar territory, reaffirming her claim over the sugarcane-dominated landscape.

The Sugarcane Tigers of Pilibhit

Nestled at the foothills of the Shivalik range, the Terai Arc landscape is a haven for biodiversity, home to the majestic Bengal tigers that attract thousands of visitors to the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve each year. However, not all tigers remain confined to the reserve. Some, like Mitthi, establish their territory in sugarcane fields bordering human settlements. Currently, experts estimate that about half a dozen such tigers reside outside the forest, adapting to life in these dense farmlands.

Despite her prolonged stay near human habitation, Mitthi has not been involved in any conflicts, a fact that has intrigued wildlife observers. Harvinder Maan, who has closely monitored her movements, frequently shares updates on his social media platforms while deliberately keeping her exact location undisclosed to ensure her safety.

Mitthi’s temporary departure to Kheri district did not go unnoticed. Locals managed to capture drone footage of her roaming the area, sparking interest among conservationists. Now back in Pilibhit, she remains under close watch by forest department teams, who are monitoring her movements to prevent any potential conflicts.
