Tinubu’s Aviation Team Targets Lasting Fix for Airport Infrastructure Gaps — Air Peace Boss

August 10, (THEWILL) — Nigeria’s aviation sector may be on the verge of a major transformation as President Bola Tinubu’s administration moves to close long-standing gaps in airport infrastructure.

Industry experts believe the planned reforms will not only enhance passenger experience but also create fresh revenue opportunities for airlines.

Speaking at the 29th League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) Annual Conference in Lagos, with the theme “Aviation Financing in Nigeria: The Risks, Opportunities and Prospects,” Air Peace Chairman and CEO, Dr Allen Onyema, identified poor airport infrastructure as a major obstacle to the growth and profitability of Nigerian carriers.

He said the absence of proper transit facilities at major airports had for years denied the country the status of a true regional hub, forcing airlines to lose passengers and revenue.

According to him, carriers operating within West and Central Africa are at a disadvantage when connecting passengers are compelled to clear immigration, undergo customs checks and recheck baggage during transit in Nigeria, a situation that often drives travellers to other African airports.

Onyema lauded the Federal Government’s decision to rebuild Lagos airport facilities to support modern transit operations, expressing confidence in the administration’s commitment.

He predicted that with sustained attention, Nigeria could acquire the infrastructure needed to compete with Africa’s leading aviation hubs within two years.

He noted that such upgrades would serve as indirect financing for airlines by reducing operational inefficiencies, cutting avoidable costs and creating the conditions for sustainable expansion.

With the right facilities in place, he maintained, Nigerian carriers could rival the continent’s top airlines within the next decade.
