Donald’s Pies has announced exciting news

A small Welsh pie shop which began life in a van at a cricket club is launching a major expansion.
Donald Pies still operates at Radyr Cricket Club at the weekends and also from a store on Quay Street in Cardiff city centre. But it now plans to produce ten times as many pies and supply venues and pie fans across Wales and the South West from a dedicated production kitchen.
Founders Harri Rees and Gareth Owens were inspired by a love of sport, pies, travel and Gareth’s late, pie-loving grandad, Donald. Our reviewer said their pies were perfect for lunch.
Gareth said in 2024: “Donald is my granddad. Donald used to take me to all my sports stuff when I was younger. He’d take me to rugby, football, cricket, and you’d always have all the food huts and all the food stands there.

So when I thought about doing something on a residency basis, it just felt right to call it Donald’s after my grandad.
“This was the kind of stuff we would get. We would get a pie… very food hut stuff… This is a bit of a love letter to my granddad.”
The new production kitchen is on Penarth Road and Gareth said it had given them the capacity to “say yes to a lot more” and spend less time on the M4.
He said: “I’ve no doubt my grandad Donald would be laughing his head off if he could see what we’ve built.”
The pair are now collaborating with Barry Town RFC, where Donald’s pies are sold pitch-side, and have a Steak & Coal Drop Stout pie collab with Tiny Rebel Brewery.

They will now also start supplying The Grange Pub in Grangetown, the National Museum of Wales, and five outlets at St Fagan’s Museum of Welsh Life.
They’ve also launched a crowdfunder to help fund the kitchen build-out, offering backers perks and discounts, and share in the brand’s future.
