‘Tombstone’ 4K Blu-Ray Details Revealed—Including A Full Remaster By Disney’s Film Preservation Team

Classic Western Tombstone is coming to 4K Blu-ray for the first time on April 22nd, complete with what distributor Disney describes as “meticulously remastered and restored” 4K HDR picture quality.

George P. Cosmatos’s cult interpretation of arguably the Wild West’s most famous shoot out, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, starring Kurt Russel, Val Kilmer and Bill Paxton, will arrive on 4K disc with a 2.35:1-ratio Dolby Vision HDR master accompanied by a 5.1-channel DTS-HDMA audio mix.

A Dolby Atmos remix from the 1993 film’s original stereo mix might have been nice, but maybe the 5.1-channel mix we’re getting will feel a little truer to the film’s original presentation than a wholesale Atmos reworking might have.

The film is being tucked, as usual with Disney releases, onto a 66GB 4K Blu-ray disc rather than the larger 100GB alternative. That should be just about enough space, though, to accommodate the R-rated (for “Strong Western Violence”!) film’s 130-minute run time without requiring much potential image-damaging compression. Provided, anyway, that as much care has been taken in getting the film onto disc as Disney suggests has gone into remastering the film for its new 4K HDR lease of life.

Bonus Features

Accompanying the film on 4K disc is a solid-looking set of extra features. These kick off with The Making Of Tombstone, a collection of three featurettes looking at different aspects of the film’s story and production: An Ensemble Cast, Making An Authentic Western, and The Gunfight At The O.K. Corral.

A further insight into the filmmaking process for Tombstone comes from a presentation of director Cosmatos’s original storyboards for the climactic O.K. Corral sequence. Aside from a few trailers and TV Spots, though, this storyboard presentation seems to be where the extra features end, meaning that Disney hasn’t managed to find or put together any new extra features for this 4K Blu-ray release that haven’t been available on previous physical media editions.

As is Disney’s way these days, the Tombstone 4K Blu-ray release in the U.S. will be exclusively available in a collectible limited edition SteelBook edition, featuring custom artwork and packaging.

The U.S. 4K Blu-ray release will also contain the HD Blu-ray version of the film, and a Digital Code giving your free access to the film via streaming if you haven’t got your 4K Blu-ray player handy.

While regular readers of my Forbes channel will know that I always advocate picking up the 4K physical media version of a film to get the all-round best picture and sound quality (and guaranteed permanent ownership of what you’ve paid for!), I should also say that the remastered version of Tombstone will additionally become available on digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home on the same April 22 drop date as the 4K Blu-ray.
