Tony Blair’s call for reset on net zero is valid, minister says
Sir Tony Blair’s call for a reset of the government’s “irrational” net-zero policies is a “valid and important contribution” to the climate debate, the environment secretary has said.
Steve Reed told Times Radio he agreed with “much of what [Blair] said” after the former prime minister said voters were being asked to make “financial sacrifices and changes in lifestyle” that would have a “minimal” effect on global emissions.
A source close to Reed later said he was referring to Blair’s backing of investment in carbon storage, nuclear, and the idea that fossil fuels will be part of the energy mix for decades to come.
But Reed insisted Britain’s taking control of its own energy supply was important for the country’s security and that the government
