TOOL’s notoriously long wait for their 2019 LP Fear Inoculum, hasn’t earned them the best reputation when it comes to releasing new music. The band’s previous studio album was their first LP in over 13 years, and while it was a commercial and critical success many were puzzled as to why it was in production limbo for so long. Fast forward six years, there haven’t been many clear signs that TOOL are avidly working on a follow up LP to Fear Inoculum, or at the very least any new music. With August 30th marking the six year anniversary of Fear Inoculum, TOOL’s next LP (whenever it arrives) has already earned the badge for having the second longest gap between LP releases.
All this is to say, TOOL aren’t getting any younger and their intricate progressive metal isn’t getting any easier to perform. It’s hard to imagine they will take another 13 and a half years to produce their next LP, and by the sound of it the band are eager to pick up the pace when it comes to releasing new music. In an interview with Loudwire Nights, members of TOOL were asked if there are any plans to release new music soon.
“We want to get another record out and play, do what we do,” guitarist Adam Jones explained. “The three of us have been jamming. I don’t know if you go, oh, the writing process has started. It’s always there. Between preparing for an upcoming tour or whatever we’re doing, there’s points where someone goes, oh, I got this and I got this. But I think we’re going to dive deep soon.”
TOOL vocalist Maynard James Keenan also offered some comments on recording new TOOL music. However, Keenan seemed to express more of an urgency to do so, which may have stemmed from the band’s recent performance at Ozzy Osbourne’s final show, Back to the Beginning. “You know, life is short,” Keenan states. ”You just got to f**king do it now. There is no waiting. You don’t know what’s coming tomorrow. You got to do it now. So that’s what we’re doing.”
Keenan had previously expressed displeasure with the fact Fear Inoculum was on the back burner for so long. Given Keenan is expressing this sense of urgency regarding releasing new music, it should be taken with a heavy dose of skepticism when discussing TOOL’s plans for new music. Skeptical in the sense that TOOL are four members, and despite Keenan’s eagerness to put out more TOOL music soon, the band’s instrumentalists have to be on the same page as well. Based on the writing process for Fear Inoculum, it’s clear that the band was not on the same page throughout the production and release window with the last LP.
One can only hope that TOOL have collectively agreed to expedite this process for whatever their next release is. It’d truly be a shame if a band as revered and talented as TOOL were to let their potential dwindle with the passing of time. If anything, maybe the band can get together to at least record their masterful cover of Black Sabbath’s “Hand of Doom.” It was easily one of the best covers performed at Black Sabbath’s Back to the Beginning.
