Top 5 Must-Watch Movies On Amazon Prime Video This Week
People may not realize this, but Amazon Prime Video is home to a bigger library of movies than Netflix, Hulu, and many other popular streaming services. That makes it more difficult to pick out something to watch because the vast number of options can be overwhelming.
To help you make a decision, we’ve picked out some of the best for you to watch this week. The selections include a true story about a sports icon, a classic witch story, an international thriller with shocking twists, an animated video game adaptation, and an early look at one of the best actors working today.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Movies based on video games have a reputation for being major misfires. They tend to either misrepresent the game or just be poorly written and feel like a rush job to make some money. However, that has changed in recent history, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
This adaptation was wise enough to go the animated route, allowing the magic of the games to be well-represented and not feel off-putting. The voice acting wasn’t too similar to the games but Jack Black’s Bowser was a standout, especially for his popular song, “Peaches.”
The film tells a pretty straightforward story that could’ve been pulled directly from the video game and that works in its favor. It pays homage to the source material while remaining accessible for people who don’t know the franchise.
Reviews for The Super Mario Bros. Movie were relatively mixed, but audiences loved it to the point where it grossed over $1 billion. Those who have seen it already will enjoy a rewatch on Prime and if you have somehow not seen it yet, it’s absolutely worth your time.
The Craft (1996)
The ’90s were rife with some of the most memorable horror movies ever, including Scream, The Blair Witch Project, and The Silence of the Lambs. One entry in the genre that sometimes gets forgotten is 1996’s The Craft. It has gone down as a cult classic of the decade that still gets watched back often.
The movie tells the story of a group of four teenage friends who pursue witchcraft for their own profit, though with some negative impacts. The premise is strong on its own, as are the witchcraft scenes but the real highlight of the film is the chemistry among the four main girls.
Fairuza Balk, Neve Campbell, Rachel True, and Robin Tunney are great together and watching the ups and downs of their friendship is what drives the movie. Although reviews were initially mixed on The Craft, time has been kinder to the film and it even got an unexpected sequel in 2020.
The Handmaiden (2016)

Thanks to the rousing success of 2019’s Parasite, more and more people have come to realize how great South Korean cinema is. There are some legitimate modern classics from the country before Parasite, though, including 2016’s The Handmaiden.
From acclaimed director Park Chan-Wook, who helmed Oldboy, The Handmaiden takes what worked about that film and goes even bigger. Instead of one shocking twist, there are actually several, changing everything about you thought you knew about the story.
The Handmaiden follows a woman hired to be a maid for a rich heiress, yet seemingly everyone involved has some kind of sinister plot or plan. That makes for a gripping tale that will have you on the edge of your seat. They are the kind of twists that you’d find in Gone Girl or something along those lines.
On top of those thrilling elements, there’s a romantic side to the movie that also works in its favor. The cast has electric chemistry that makes those scenes just as good as the twists. The film’s 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes showcases how incredible it actually is.
Bronson (2008)
Tom Hardy became a household name in the early 2010s thanks to roles in Christopher Nolan’s Inception and The Dark Knight Rises but his talents as an actor were evident before that. The best example of an early great performance by Hardy came in 2008’s Bronson.
This film is based on the true story of Charles Bronson, a man who is widely known as Britain’s most violent prisoner. Initially, Bronson was only sentenced to a seven-year sentence in 1974, which was extended due to fights. He got out in 1987 and returned about a year later.
In fact, Charles Bronson is actually still in prison to this day, as he eventually received life sentences because of his violent outbursts. Hardy is phenomenal as Bronson, managing to make his protagonist both charismatic and completely unhinged.
Tom Hardy has played some great characters in his career, whether it was as Bane, Max Rockatansky, Eddie Brock, or even Al Capone. Yet it’s this real life person who might be his most outlandish in the best way possible.
Air (2023)

There are plenty of sports biopics out there, especially when it comes to legendary athletes. Air is another in that subgenre, yet it goes a different route. Instead of focusing on the career and life of Michael Jordan, it shines a light on Jordan’s pivotal signing with the Nike brand.
People may not know it, but Jordan’s contract with Nike changed the history of sports and the brand itself. It altered the way deals are structured for athletes and helped turn Nike into the powerhouse we all know it to be today. Air tells the story of how that came to light by focusing on the other people involved.
Michael Jordan isn’t even included in the film other than by name. Instead, the plot centers on Nike executives (played by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who talk with Jordan’s mother (Viola Davis) about how to make this a possibility. Add in Jason Bateman, Chris Tucker, and Marlon Wayans, and this is a stellar ensemble cast.
Air landed a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy since it was met with widespread acclaim. The film holds a 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating and was a hit at the South by Southwest Film Festival.
