Tralee Music School has launched a new programme with the aim of supporting the next generation of traditional musicians.

The ‘Kerry Fiddle and Flute Programme’ has been designed to make the fiddle and flute more accessible to young musicians, with the goal of preserving and celebrating the Kingdom’s rich musical heritage.

The programme is aimed at removing barriers to entry for families eager to introduce their children to traditional music. Therefore, students who take part will have the opportunity to rent a fiddle or flute at a very low rate.

Students of the initiative will have high-calibre teachers including celebrated fiddler Áine Ní Chonaill and outstanding flutist Donnocha O’Hanlon.

A renowned musician in the Sliabh Luachra style, Ms Ní Chonaill is the daughter of award-winning fiddler Connie O’Connell of Kilnamartyra. She has recorded and toured extensively with her husband Francis O’Connor and is a regular tutor at the prestigious Willie Clancy Summer School.

Mr O’Hanlon is a gifted primary school teacher and flute player. He is known for his infectious enthusiasm, skilled instruction, and deep love of traditional Irish music.

Programme participants will be encouraged to partake in group sessions, collaborate with peers, and ultimately work towards joining Ceilí bands and the Music Generation Kerry Trad Orchestra, to enhance their musicianship and makes friends.

The ‘Kerry Fiddle and Flute Programme’ is open to children who are complete beginners as well as youngsters who already play.

Those who would like their child to take part should contact Michelle O’Sullivan on 087 223 5222.

The programme represents a collaboration with Oidhreacht Music School and Music Generation Kerry.
