Tour of Britain Women: Lorena Wiebes among early star names

The event, which is the UK’s largest professional women’s cycling race, is scheduled to begin on June 5.

The organisers announced the first group of star riders who will be participating in the race.

Wiebes, who is ranked third in the world, will be racing in the European champion’s jersey.

She won the third stage of last year’s Tour of Britain and has achieved a dozen victories in UCI races in the UK since 2019.

Joining her on the start list is Ruby Roseman-Gannon, the 2024 stage winner and former Australian road race champion, and Kimberley (Le Court) Pienaar.

Pienaar’s victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège in late April concluded a strong spring campaign, during which she finished in the top six in Paris Roubaix, the Ronde van Vlaanderen, and La Flèche Wallonne single-day races.

The final pair of stages in the Borders and Glasgow will be particularly significant for Pienaar, whose mother is from Scotland.

Danish rider Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig, who won a bronze medal in the World Championship road race in Glasgow city centre in 2023, and the mountains jersey at the Women’s Tour of Scotland in 2019, will also be participating.

Completing the first batch of confirmed riders is Kristen Faulkner, the double Olympic gold medallist and American national road race champion.

Faulkner, who hails from Alaska, will be racing in the stars and stripes jersey.

She took a memorable solo victory in the road race at the Paris Olympics last summer, before winning her second gold medal in the team pursuit event in the velodrome.

Faulkner said: “I’m really excited for the Tour of Britain Women.

“It is going to be a lot of rolling terrain which is unique to the UK and I actually really like that so I’m quite excited.

“After a slow start to my season and coming back from an injury this winter, I’m really excited to have a big goal and I’m hoping to peak for the Tour of Britain so that’ll be a really exciting goal for me to look forward to and to have as a key race in my season.”

Further team and rider announcements for the race will be made in the coming days.

The Tour of Britain will have a pair of stages in Scotland, the first in the Borders, starting and finishing in Kelso, before the final stage in Glasgow on Sunday, June 8.
