Tourism Vision 2047: Industry aims for $3 trillion tourism economy and 200 million jobs

India’s tourism industry has laid out a plan for enhancing direct and indirect employment in the sector from approximately 5 crore to almost 20 crore.

Accordingly, the plan was unveiled at the national tourism conclave under the roadmap Tourism Vision 2047, which entails the creation of a $3 trillion tourism economy generating 100 million inbound tourists, 20 billion domestic visits and 200 million tourism-related jobs.

The conclave brought together the country’s 10 major national tourism and hospitality associations, industry stakeholders and policymakers under the aegis of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH).

“Tourism is the world’s highest job multiplier—one in four new jobs globally comes from tourism, aviation and hospitality,” said Indian Hotels Company Limited’s managing director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal, who is also the chairman of FAITH.

“With India’s demographic advantage, this sector is a natural engine for employment and GDP growth.”

As per FAITH, the tourism roadmap depends on policy reforms such as infrastructure status for tourism, inclusion in the concurrent list and industry status for tourism in all states and union territories.

Besides, the industry called for a global and domestic marketing push through aggressive promotion of India as a premier tourism destination via government–industry partnerships.

Furthermore, FAITH called for infrastructure development and expansion beyond the proposed 50 destinations, with harmonised infrastructure across states.

In addition, the industry body highlighted the role of sustainability through adoption of the Sustainable Tourism Criteria of India, carrying capacity guidelines and ecological protection of destinations.

“Our objective is to make tourism a national priority, doubling its contribution from 5 per cent to 10 per cent of India’s GDP by 2047,” said Mr. Ajeet Bajaj, vice chairman, FAITH.

“Achieving this requires a whole-of-nation approach, with strong collaboration between the central and state governments, private stakeholders and local communities.”
