Toyota clears the air around E20 usage in its cars – Car News

Toyota has issued an official statement regarding its vehicles running on E20. Here’s what Toyota has to say.

The use of ethanol-blended fuel in cars has become a popular topic, and some manufacturers, such as Tata Motors, have clearly said it’s okay to use E20 and their vehicles are optimised for it. Bajaj also clarified that its latest offerings (BS6) are good to run on E20 fuel, but the older vehicles may need a fuel system cleaner to keep the plumbing free of gunk.

While there was confusion about Toyota’s vehicles running on E20, the carmaker has clarified the scenario. Please note that this is first-hand information from Toyota.

Toyota’s take on E20

At Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd., we continue to support the country’s progressive transition towards clean and indigenous energy options while continuing to deliver mobility solutions that are both sustainable and customer centric. In this context substitution of petrol by ethanol is critical to India, as ethanol-fuel is carbon neutral, and contributes to energy self-reliance, support farmer incomes, and aids in reducing emissions.

Effective from 1st April 2023 in line with availability of E20 fuel, all gasoline vehicles are fully material compatible with E20 fuel, as committed by the auto industry. A modest variation in fuel economy is likely with E20, in view of ethanol’s energy characteristics, as confirmed by test agencies.

In case of vehicles sold prior to 1st April 2023, the owner’s manual would naturally specify conditions compatible with gasoline blended up to 10% ethanol (E10) which was the fuel available at that time.

However, this should not be interpreted that vehicles sold prior to 1st April 2023 can’t use E20 fuel. This is based on findings of tests conducted on wide range of older vehicles across industry, by government testing agencies. Hence, we understand that there is no significant impact on earlier vehicles (before 1st April 2023).

We urge our customers to refill fuel from authorized fuel stations to avoid any spurious / adulterated fuel to prevent any inconvenience during usage. We remain focused on providing smooth and reliable ownership experience and encouraging customers to reach out to our authorized dealerships for any specific queries.”

What was the confusion?

The confusion arose when an older snapshot of a query regarding the usage of E20 fuel emerged. It was a customer seeking help from Toyota’s support centre, and the comment was in regard to using E20 in an Urban Cruiser.

The support centre had mentioned that the customer refer to the owner’s manual of the vehicle for details on which fuel was compatible (E10 or E20). Since that is an old query, Toyota has now directly answered the question. E20 is safe to use.
