Trade restriction in focus as African leaders meet for IMT Summit
Government leaders, industry executives, investors and development institutions from across Africa are set to address the impact of global supply chain disruptions, protectionist trade measures and shifts in economic alliances, which are accelerating the need for Africa’s industrial advancement and trade diversification.
The delegates from across Africa will convene at the West Africa Industrialisation, Manufacturing and Trade (IMT) Summit and Exhibition 2025 from 21 – 23 October 2025 at the Landmark Centre, Lagos, to explore policies, trade strategies, industrial innovation, infrastructure, digital commerce and finance.
Discussions will focus on how African economies can leverage opportunities created by evolving global trade dynamics to drive sustainable industrial and trade development, a statement by the organiser said.
According to experts, the ongoing tariff standoff between the United States and China, with the imposition of duties reaching as high as 145 per cent, is forcing global manufacturers and buyers to reassess sourcing strategies and trade partnerships.
They noted that rising tensions between major economies are creating ripple effects across supply chains, sourcing models and international economic alliances.
They also highlighted that West Africa is emerging as an investment-ready, industrially ambitious and increasingly unified strategic partner.
They added that regional integration efforts, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), are gaining traction and positioning the region for expanded trade and industrial growth.
Theme, ‘Accelerating West Africa’s Sustainable Industrial Revolution for Economic Prosperity’, the Portfolio Director, Africa, dmg events, Wemimo Oyelana, noted that ongoing global trade tensions present a critical opportunity for Africa to recalibrate its trade strategy by prioritising intra-continental partnerships and diversifying its international trade mix.
He added that the West Africa IMT Summit and Exhibition will bring together senior stakeholders from across the continent to chart a course for a resilient and sustainable industrial revolution.
“Key discussions will focus on creating an enabling environment for investment, unlocking capital, fostering regional value chains, and accelerating infrastructure and energy development to power industries sustainably,” Oyelana said.
He stressed that the event will provide a timely and strategic platform for shaping the next chapter of industrialisation in the region.
