Dubai is known for its world-class infrastructure and transportation system. According to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024, the UAE ranked 5th globally for road quality and 10th for public transport efficiency. In other studies, Dubai has also secured the top spot in the Middle East and Africa for public transportation.

Among all, one of the most convenient modes of travelling in the city is via taxis, which are overseen by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Dubai Taxi Roof Colours Explained

One of the most distinctive features of Dubai taxis is their brightly coloured roofs. While all official taxis share the same cream or sand-colored body, the roof colour helps passengers quickly identify the operating company or the type of specialised service.

Red: These are operated by Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), and with the largest fleet, it is the most common taxi you’ll see.

Pink: Driven exclusively by female drivers, this service is for women and families. It is a specialised offering under DTC.

Yellow: Found in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, these taxis are among the RTA-franchised private operators.

Green: Arabia Taxis, often recognised for their eco-friendly or hybrid vehicles.

Blue: These taxis have a large fleet, feature petrol and hybrid vehicles, maintain consistent driver ratings, and operate across multiple emirates.

Orange: These taxis have a smaller fleet, are frequently found near metro stations, and are RTA-compliant with updated technology and fare standards.

Purple: Rare and operated by Kabi Taxi, Dubai’s newest operator, these taxis prioritise modernity and practicality within their smaller fleet.

Notably, all franchised companies (regardless of roof colour) charge the exact same RTA-regulated metered fares. The price of your journey is based purely on distance, time of day, and any applicable surcharges (like Salik tolls or airport pickup fees), not the colour of the taxi you ride in.

The colour difference allows clients to choose taxis based on availability, preferred service (such as women-only rides), or environmental concerns without having to worry about the service quality. Furthermore, the system promotes healthy competition among businesses while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
