In response to the European Union’s economic crisis, the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, and global geopolitical tensions (including the Russia-Ukraine war and U.S.-China rivalry), Tunisia has shifted its trade strategy toward exploring new markets beyond its traditional European partners. The goal is to diversify export destinations, enhance competitiveness, and reduce dependency on the EU.

Vietnam and ASEAN: A Gateway to Asia

While trade between Tunisia and Vietnam reached 486 million dinars in 2024, Tunisian exports only accounted for 10 million dinars, compared to 476 million dinars in imports. Despite this imbalance, Tunisia sees Vietnam as a strategic entry point to the broader ASEAN market—a region with vast economic potential.

Africa: Real Opportunities Through COMESA and AfCFTA

In Africa, Tunisia is expanding its presence in countries like Madagascar and the Democratic Republic of Congo, focusing on exporting technology services, higher education, building materials, and renewable energy. Tunisian exports to the DRC totaled $1.65 million, with untapped potential estimated at $5.3 million.

Tunisian Olive Oil Gains Ground in Africa

Exports of Tunisian olive oil to sub-Saharan Africa surpassed 60 million dinars in 2024, marking a growth of over 50% compared to 2023. Promising markets include Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Rwanda, and others, as Tunisia aims to position itself as a key supplier in the region.

Strengthening Partnerships in Eastern Europe

Trade with the Czech Republic saw significant growth in 2024, reaching 892.5 million dinars. Tunisian exports—mainly mechanical and textile products—increased by 33%. The untapped export potential in this market is estimated at $180 million.

Return to Iraq and Expansion in Asia

Tunisian exports to Iraq reached 47.2 million dinars in 2024, up 5.7% from 2023. In Asia, Tunisia is promoting its organic olive oil, highly valued by health-conscious Japanese and Chinese consumers. The country’s participation in Expo Osaka 2025 will play a key role in raising awareness of Tunisian products.

Tunisia’s new export strategy reflects a clear vision to diversify and strengthen its international trade footprint. This strategic shift is paving the way for more resilient and sustainable economic growth.
