Two SDJA students win awards at Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair – San Diego Union-Tribune

Two San Diego Jewish Academy students, Spencer Foss and Ava Lerman, recently entered projects into the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Both decided to do projects in the field of microbiology.

Ava’s project, Effectiveness of Ultrasonic Waves on Cyanobacteria for Algal Bloom Mitigation, earned her a second-place prize in the senior division. She was also awarded with a professional society award by the Water Environment Federation as well as the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.

Spencer’s project, Sucralose Exposed Bacteria’s Relationship to Future Increase in Antibiotic Resistance Genes, earned him first place honors in the senior division. Spencer was also recognized with a professional society award by the San Diego County Dental Foundation.

In addition, Spencer was recognized with the Phil Gay Award for being one of only four students in the San Diego area to compete in GSDSEF for five or more years. He has earned four first place recognitions and one second place recognition in those five years, according to a news release.
