Tyler Perry’s New Madea’s Film Fails to Debut at No. 1 (This Fantasy Film With 96% RT Score Continued Its Domination Instead)

Tyler Perry’s Madea franchise has been around for over two decades, with the first appearance in the stage play I Can Do It All by Myself in 1999, and a movie debut, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, in 2005. The franchise has just received a new addition.

Madea’s Destination Wedding marks the 13th entry in the film series, and has just hit Netflix on Jul. 11. After the success Perry has had on the platform thanks to his multiple-project deal with the streamer, the new addition also debuted with strong viewership numbers, despite its poor reviews. However, Madea’s Destination Wedding didn’t manage to top the charts and debuted in second place just behind KPop Demon Hunters, per Tudum.

As Madea’s Destination Wedding Tops the Netflix Charts, Another Tyler Perry Film Becomes a Streaming Hit

As Tyler Perry’s Madea Destination Wedding enjoys chart-topping success, another recent entry from the award-winning director sparks renewed interest.

For the week between July 7 and 13, Madea’s Destination Wedding received 19.1 million views and 33.1 million hours viewed. Considering the film had only premiered on the platform on Jul.11, it only had two days to make an impact, so its strong viewership count is nothing but impressive.

The film became the No. 1 film in ten countries, including the U.S., and entered the Top 10 in 69 countries. However, it wasn’t enough to end KPop Demon Hunter‘s dominance. The fantasy animation film debuted on Netflix on June 20, and has been a major streaming hit since. The film received praise for its animation, soundtrack, voice acting, visual stile, and storyline. On Rotten Tomatoes, the fantasy animated film boasts stunning reviews, with a near-perfect 96% approval score from the critics, and the Certified Fresh badge, and 91% from the audience.

In its fourth week, KPop Demon Hunters reached the No. 1 spot for the second time, adding 24.2 million views and 40.4 million hours viewed. Last week, the chart-topper was The Old Guard 2, which fell in third place in its second week. In total, KPop Demon Hunters received 80.3 million views since its release. Although Madea’s Destination Wedding pulled in strong numbers, it might not reach No. 1. Per FlixPatrol, Brick continues its dominance, closely followed by KPop Demon Hunters. Madea’s Destination Wedding has been the No. 1 film on Netflix in the U.S. since it premiered, but has scored less than 20 No. 1s since, and will probably miss the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row.

Despite Poor Reviews, Tyler Perry’s New Thriller Just Celebrated a Massive Achievement on Netflix

The thriller drama didn’t resonate with the critics, but Netflix subscribers couldn’t get enough of it.

Madea’s Destination Wedding Wasn’t a Critical Hit

The Madea franchise has constantly fluctuated when it comes to the critics’ opinion. More often than not, the films have received poor reviews from the critics, and poor reception from the audience, as well. Madea’s Destination Wedding is no exception.

The new comedy in the long-running franchise boasts an abysmal 15% approval score out of 13 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience was kinder, giving it a 48% rating on the Popcornmeter, but that didn’t lead to a positive score either. However, it’s far from the worst rating in the franchise. Just slightly below 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman (with 16% from the critics but 86% from the audience), the new entry is above 2019’s Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral, with 11% from the critics and 32% from the audience, and the franchise’s worst-rated Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, with just 5% from the critics and 41% from the audience.

Both Madea’s Destination Wedding and KPop Demon Hunters are streaming on Netflix.
