Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna urges CM to grant Rs 50 Crore special aid for rain damage works

Media Release

Udupi, Jul 19: MLA Yashpal Suvarna has written to the chief minister of Karnataka requesting a special grant of Rs 50 crore to address rain-related damage in the Udupi assembly constituency.

Due to excessive and unseasonal rainfall in Udupi district, including the Udupi assembly constituency, several areas have suffered significant damage. In the month of May alone, Udupi received 837 mm of rainfall, compared to the average of 166 mm—an increase of 409%. June also saw record-breaking rainfall, reportedly the highest in the country, as covered by several media outlets.

The continuous downpour has led to widespread flooding in many parts of the constituency, necessitating emergency relief and rehabilitation measures. Coastal erosion has been observed along several shoreline areas. Strong winds and heavy rains have uprooted hundreds of trees, damaging electric poles, homes, roads, stormwater drains, school buildings, culverts, and bridges.

MLA Yashpal Suvarna noted that for the past two years, no funds have been released under the Natural Calamity Relief scheme, resulting in poor maintenance of rural roads and severe transportation challenges. Emphasizing the urgent need to protect and repair public infrastructure, he appealed to the chief minister to approve a special allocation of Rs 50 crore under natural disaster relief for the Udupi assembly constituency.
