UK households told to check old film camera that could be worth £375 | UK | News
To children growing up today, a film camera seems no different to the Victorian relics they might examine in a school history lesson.
They will never know the days where pictures were at a premium, a film of 30 exposures meant your photo opportunities were limited.
It is likely that they will never understand how we coped without being able to critique the lighting or the way we looked until weeks later when the film was ready to collect from the developers.
Often, collecting and examining photographs from holidays or weddings was an occasion in itself – a world away from the instantaneous nature of modern-day photography.
In a world of cameras secreted in phones with professional quality resolutions, many might believe that the value of an old film camera is lost, but according to one expert, that is not the case.
According to Phillip, a former Fashion and Portrait Photographer at PH Photographic, those with old film camera in their house could be sitting on a potential goldmine.
He said: “Film photography is a more tactile and personally satisfying form of photography.
“Depending on the model and condition it could bring in some beneficial cash for you.
“35mm film cameras like Olympus, Nikon and Canons are retailing used for $100 – $500+ (£75- £375) on auction sites.
“Medium format cameras tend to sell for more. Mamiya 6X7’s can fetch $500 – $1500 (£375 – £1,125) body and lens.”
The value of the cameras is underpinned by a decline in supply combined with a rise in popularity, particularly amongst millennials and Gen-Z.
According to Business Research Insights, reusable film cameras as well as disposable and polaroid cameras have seen a resurgence in recent years.
They said: “The interest has revived among younger generations for film photography and this has been trending from so long that these people are taking it as cool feature to have in their hand.
“Though there is a dominance of digital photography, still millennials wants to feel their nostalgic appeal and gen Z are trying to be as aesthetic as possible with this Film Photography Cameras Market. Reason for growth in this trend is desire for authenticity, craftsmanship, and a break from the instant gratification of digital photography.
“The desire has led the market towards Film Photography workshops, community darkrooms, and online forums dedicated to analogue photography. This market is witnessing rise in participation due to these factors.
“This trend shows that anything is revival and the result is this renewed appreciation for the art and craft of film photography among younger generation.”
