UMD hosts upcoming conference: Our Climate Futures Participatory Science on a Great Lake
Our environment is changing, bringing new challenges that impact us all. Members from UMD’s Institute on Environment joined GMN this morning to talk about their upcoming conference addressing these issues.
The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Institute on the Environment is inviting the public to participate in the upcoming Our Climate Futures: Participatory Science on a Great Lake conference, happening February 3rd and 4th. The event focuses on how communities can collaborate with researchers to address environmental changes and challenges.
“Usually, it’s the job of scientists to monitor what’s happening,” said Jinny Alexander, one of the conference organizers. “But there are so many people in our community who are concerned, interested, and willing to help us better understand changes in the environment.”
The conference highlights how individuals, regardless of their background, can contribute to scientific research. “You don’t have to be a researcher to get involved,” explained Julie Etterson. “You can record observations using tools like iNaturalist or the Bell Biodiversity Atlas, or even participate in community snow observation projects.”
Attendees will have access to workshops, presentations, field trips, and networking opportunities, with discussions on volunteer engagement, local environmental monitoring, and more. “There’s something for everyone,” said Becca Arends. “We hope people leave with a stronger sense of community and a belief that even small contributions can make a difference.”
The event is free and open to the public, with registration encouraged. Join the conversation and explore how science and community can work together!
