UN launches action plan to promote women’s rights

The UN launched a new action agenda to promote rights and achieve gender equality during a high-level event at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) session at UN Headquarters in New York last week.

Building on the 1995 Beijing Declaration, this plan aims to close the gender divide and elevate women’s voices in decision-making. UN Women chief Sima Bahous highlighted that while there have been some improvements, women still face violence, climate impacts, and exclusion from decision-making.

The Beijing+30 Action Agenda focuses on achieving digital equity, freedom from poverty, zero violence, equal decision-making power, and climate justice for all women and girls.

Launched during CSW69, the agenda aligns with the UN Secretary-General’s latest review and the newly adopted Political Declaration, aiming to meet the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed stated that 2025 is a “call to action” to confront women and girls’ challenges. She emphasized the need for bold actions and commitment to ensure lasting impacts.

The agenda prioritizes adolescent girls and young women and emphasizes financing for gender equality and mobilizing gender data. “Together, we choose action over apathy,” Ms. Bahous said, urging the revival of the spirit of the Beijing Declaration. Panel discussions at the launch highlighted both achievements and ongoing challenges.
