UN Tourism and E1 Series Launch Sustainable Sports Tourism Initiative

UN Tourism and E1 Series launch sustainable sports tourism initiative with a shared goal to promote clean mobility and responsible tourism through high-impact sporting events. The collaboration was formally cemented in Monaco, a global symbol of marine sustainability, during the city’s latest E1 race event.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United Nations agency and the world’s first electric raceboat championship marks a bold step toward merging environmental innovation with the global appeal of sports tourism. It’s a union that reflects growing interest in carbon-free travel experiences and the power of sport to inspire sustainable development.

Fusing Electric Mobility and Tourism Innovation

A New Era of Marine-Based Tourism

At the heart of this agreement lies a shared commitment to promoting clean marine transport technologies. As part of this partnership, E1 and UN Tourism will spotlight electric mobility on the world stage, highlighting how innovative technology can align with tourism’s environmental goals.

The E1 Series showcases fully electric raceboats that cut across iconic coastlines, bringing excitement to cities like Jeddah, Doha, and Dubrovnik. The tour continues in Lagos, Nigeria, and will reach its 2025 finale in Miami, USA — reinforcing the global scope of this sustainability-driven sporting series.

Voices Leading the Change

Zurab Pololikashvili, UN Tourism Secretary-General, stated, “The intersection of sports and tourism offers immense potential for sustainable development, economic growth, and the promotion of cultural exchange. Our agreement with E1 Series is a step forward in realising this potential.”

Alejandro Agag, E1 Series Founder and Chairman, added, “Following my recent recognition for advancing electric mobility, I’m even more committed to demonstrating how sport can be a powerful catalyst for positive environmental change.” He has also been appointed a UN Tourism Special Ambassador for Sport.

Sustainable Development Through Sport

Aligning With the UN’s Global Goals

The agreement reflects a direct contribution to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).

Through education, engagement, and live events, both organizations aim to raise awareness about marine conservation, ecosystem restoration, and the value of sustainable travel. Their combined global networks will help amplify these messages across borders.

Tourism With a Purpose

Every year, over 180 million international tourists travel specifically to attend sports events. This number continues to rise as sports tourism emerges as a powerful economic and cultural force, valued at approximately $685 billion in 2024 and growing at 17.5% annually.

The E1 Series is uniquely positioned to merge eco-conscious values with thrilling global events, offering destinations not just increased tourist arrivals, but also opportunities to showcase local sustainability efforts and marine conservation projects.

The Evolving Role of Sports in Global Tourism

Why Electric Racing Matters

Electric marine racing introduces a new paradigm in competitive sports — one that values innovation without sacrificing environmental responsibility. With zero-emission vessels and a globe-trotting calendar, the E1 Series is designed to educate and inspire communities while delivering high-octane excitement.

Cities that host E1 races benefit from a spotlight on sustainable urban and coastal development. The visual appeal of electric racing against dramatic marine backdrops creates compelling narratives for eco-conscious travelers and event organizers alike.

Legacy Beyond the Finish Line

The UN Tourism and E1 partnership aspires to leave lasting legacies in every city visited. That includes empowering local businesses, promoting eco-friendly transport options, and encouraging local authorities to invest in sustainable infrastructure.

By turning electric racing into a platform for change, the initiative will promote awareness of clean technologies and elevate the environmental standards expected of future tourism models. Together, E1 and UN Tourism aim to redefine how the world travels, competes, and conserves.
