The United Nations has declared that 17 areas in Sudan, including parts of Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum, and Jazira, are now at risk of famine due to severe food shortages and ongoing conflict.
The warning comes one year after famine was first confirmed in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur in August 2024. Since then, the crisis has spread to multiple regions, with humanitarian agencies reporting dire conditions, particularly in Al Jazirah state, where residents are reportedly resorting to eating animal fodder and food waste to survive.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has raised alarms over the blockade of humanitarian aid to Al-Jazira, where starvation is rampant. Despite providing digital cash assistance to around 250,000 people in the region, the WFP warns that food supplies in markets are dwindling, and the scale of need far exceeds current relief efforts.
“The situation, especially in Al Jazirah, has only gotten worse,” a UN spokesperson said. “We reiterate our call for all parties to end the violence, engage in dialogue, and prioritize the lives of civilians.”
The hunger crisis is further compounded by a rapidly spreading cholera outbreak in Khartoum, where health officials have launched a 10-day vaccination campaign. The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the deteriorating health conditions amid limited access to medical care and clean water.
As fighting between warring factions continues to disrupt aid delivery, millions of Sudanese remain trapped in what the UN describes as one of the world’s worst humanitarian disasters. International agencies are urging immediate action to prevent further loss of life.
“The escalating needs make it imperative to address hunger at the scale required,” the WFP stated. “Without urgent intervention, famine will claim countless more lives.”
The UN and partner organizations continue to push for unhindered humanitarian access while calling for a ceasefire to allow lifesaving aid to reach those most in need.
