UOG science students undertake field research

FIVE final-year science students from the University of Goroka travelled to neighbouring Chimbu Province to do their research work at the Mauberema Conservation site, as part of their academic assessment.

The students will be spending the next six weeks studying the rich high-altitude biodiversity of the area as part of their research work.

The team is made up of two Biology students and three Environmental Science students; two females and three males.

The purpose of the industrial training and research is to gain hands on job experience as part of their final-year assessment.

They are from the School of Science and Technology, Division of Biological and Environmental Science.

Mauberema Ecotourism, Nature Conservation, Education, Research and Training Centre director Moses Kumul said they were pleased to host the students at the centre.

“On the first day, we went through formal induction with them. They were introduced to MENCERTC as an organisation and what we do here,” he said.

“As part of their stay here, they will do project site visits, assessments and project scoping. They will design their own specific research project to work on.

“They will later present their project proposals and work on the project in the next few weeks. Once they complete their project, they will be do a final presentation of the project findings and be assessed accordingly.”

He said that this was not the first time they have engaged with students from the University of Goroka (UOG), as over the years a lot of students at the university had done research and field work with MENCERTC.

“We have been receiving students from UOG for field trips and industrial training since 2017. So, we have received over 50 students from UOG for field trips and research work,” Mr Kumul said.

“We have an existing memorandum of understanding (MOU) with UOG and, therefore, we are receiving, accommodating and training their students, mostly final year science students.

“We also receive students from PNG University of Natural Resource and Environment (UNRE), PNG University of Technology, Innovative University of Enga and Divine Word University for field trips and internship program.
