Uproar and confusion results after Maple Mountain decides to fire head football coach Kalin Hall | News, Sports, Jobs

Maple Mountain head coach Kalin Hall talks to his team after the Region 7 game against Orem in Spanish Fork on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023.

Maple Mountain head football coach Kalin Hall was presented a letter by school administrators on Wednesday notifying him that his contract would not be renewed.

Hall and his staff as well as players and parents were given no clear reasons why the move was made. The program had improved on the field in recent seasons, including going 8-4 in 2024.

While parents of players have publicly expressed frustration about the move and the lack of transparency, Nebo School District reiterated its official policy that coaches are at-will positions and thus the administration can choose to go a different direction.

Kalin Hall’s son, former BYU and current NFL quarterback Jaren Hall, posted a series of statements on his @jarenhall3 X account (formerly Twitter) on Friday expressing his sentiments about the situation, saying:

“Our family’s had a lot of people from the community reach out about the situation involving my dad being let go as the head football coach of our high school at Maple Mountain. For those people here’s a few things on the matter.

“I don’t usually speak publicly, but given my family’s involvement in this situation, I feel it’s important to share my thoughts.

“While I understand that sports may not be the end-all, be-all, they play a significant role in shaping young people’s lives, offering opportunities and lessons that extend far beyond the field.

“Over the past two years, Maple Mountain High School has transformed from an average football team into one that is respected and consistently produces college caliber players–something that my brothers and I, who had been a part of the program for nearly a decade, had never seen.

“My father’s coaching approach emphasizes accountability and character, helping young men not only excel on the field but also prepare for life after sports. His impact extends beyond just football;

“it’s about developing responsible, hard-working individuals. This is a philosophy that the Spanish Fork and Mapleton communities have embraced, and I’m incredibly grateful for the support they’ve shown him and his staff.

“However, the recent decision to remove my father in the middle of a successful program rebuild raises serious concerns about the disconnect between the school administration and its community.

“They gave no real reason that would constitute letting a coach go in a school where they value the contribution of the game of football.

“The lack of explanation for this decision is troubling and seems to prioritize personal issues over the well-being of the players who many are counting on the structure and mentorship the program provides.

“It’s important to note the athletic director that was apart of the decision to hire my dad is no longer there. The current leaders are individuals who may not fully understand the value of sports or who may have personal issues with my father’s coaching style.

“This lack of objectivity only compounds the damage done to the program and its players. Ultimately, this is about the kids who have poured their hearts into this program, their families, and the community that’s supported them.

“It’s about more than just wins and losses; it’s about creating an environment where these young men can grow into responsible adults. Removing a coach who has built such a strong foundation for their future–without offering clear reasons for his dismissal–sends the wrong message.

“I don’t know if this statement will change anything, but I believe the people in this community, and the families who have supported the program, deserve to know the lack of transparency behind this decision.

“Here’s the petition link on for anyone who feels close enough to the situation to sign in showing support for him to be reinstated as the head coach.

While the petition to reinstate Kalin Hall has over 1,000 signatures, situations like this result in it being nearly impossible for the coach and school to reconcile their differences.

As Jaren Hall noted in his public statements, the individuals who will be most affected are the Maple Mountain athletes themselves. They now have to adjust to having the program shift and some may consider transferring to other schools.

Maple Mountain will proceed in the process of hiring a new head football coach, according to Nebo School District.
