VeryDarkMan Slams Nollywood Over Unauthorized Film Inspired By His Life

Controversial Nigerian social media critic VeryDarkMan has expressed strong displeasure over a Nollywood movie that appears to depict his life without his consent.

The critic’s outrage followed the circulation of a movie poster on social media featuring veteran actor Gentle Jack in a role that closely mirrors VeryDarkMan’s persona.

The film’s title and character portrayal make clear references to VeryDarkMan’s identity, but the filmmakers reportedly did not seek his approval.

In a video shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, VeryDarkMan stated that while he wouldn’t oppose a film adaptation of his life, he felt disrespected by the lack of consultation. He was particularly upset that the filmmakers did not reach out to learn his personal story before proceeding with the project.

“I’m not happy about it, to be honest,” he said in the clip. “Baba Gentle Jack should have written to me, asked, ‘VDM, what’s your story? I want to play your role properly.’”

In the caption accompanying his post, he further criticised the movie, noting that while the casting choice and resemblance were accurate, the storyline failed to do justice to his journey.

“By now most of you have seen the Nollywood film where Gentle Jack plays me (VeryDarkMan). I’m honestly not happy with it—it was cringeworthy and irritating to watch. They picked the right face, but the story was all wrong,” he wrote.

The incident has sparked debate online, with many questioning the ethics of using a public figure’s likeness without their permission.
